The Ghazali OS

the Ghazali Operating System for Behavioural Change.

In the Digital Parenting Toolkit, I’ve explained the what, the good, the bad, and the ugly of technology use. But the big question remains: HOW do we change behaviour?

The Ghazali OS is my approach, built around CBT principles, to help turn bad habits into good ones and create lasting behavioural change; for our children and for ourselves.

Lesson 1: Introduction

How do you create positive, lasting change when technology is taking up too much of your children’s time?

In this course, we go deep into the “how”; using the Ghazali OS, a systematic approach to changing behaviour by changing how we think and the habits we develop.

Real change doesn’t happen overnight. It takes time, patience, and consistency.

Lesson 2: Set the Rules

Permanent positive change starts with commitment. The Ghazali OS takes this a step further by turning your goals into a contract with yourself; one that is timed, detailed, binding, and self-enforcing.

Why timed? Because your goals should evolve as you progress. What starts as “I’ll run 2 km every day for a month” can grow into bigger and better goals over time.

Change becomes powerful when you turn intention into commitment.

Lesson 3: Push Your Limits

Don’t just break bad habits; replace them. 🔄

The next step in the Ghazali OS is Mujahada; the idea of striving, making an effort, and pushing your limits.

The goal isn’t simply to stop doing something bad. It’s to replace the bad habit with a good one and then keep challenging yourself to improve.

Think about it:
🍟 Junk food → 🥗 Healthy food
📱 Mindless scrolling → 💡 Productive technology use
⏰ Wasted time → 🎯 Purposeful action

The same principle can transform the way we use technology.

Replace the bad. Build the good. Push your limits.

Lesson 4: Finding Alternatives

You don’t always need to quit a bad habit; you can replace it with a better one. 🔄

This is especially important when it comes to technology. Instead of simply telling our children to spend less time on their devices, what if we showed them better ways to use technology? 📱

Learning, creating, exploring, building skills and discovering new opportunities are just some of the positive habits technology can encourage.

And with AI, finding those ideas has never been easier.

Let’s move from “Stop using technology” to “Use technology better.”

Lesson 5: Think Before You Act

Before you act, think. 🧠

The next step in the Ghazali OS is Murāqabah; pausing to reflect before taking action.

We have agency. We are not simply victims of our circumstances or our habits. Before reaching for your phone or using technology, ask yourself:

👉 Will this action benefit me?
👉 Is it aligned with my goals?
👉 Or am I simply passing time and seeking entertainment?

Pause. Think. Weigh the consequences. Then act.

Lesson 6: Daily Review

A simple journal can become one of the most powerful tools for positive change in your life. ✍️

In the Ghazali OS, this practice is called Muhasaba; taking account of your own actions.

At the end of each day, pause and reflect:
🔹 What did I do?
🔹 What did I accomplish?
🔹 What could I have done better?
🔹 What can I learn from today?

Every action should have two levels of thinking: pre-thinking before you act, and post-action reflection after you act.

Start with a journal. Start with a few minutes a day. Start changing your behaviour, one day at a time.

Lesson 7: Pay the Price

Your actions have consequences; and real growth means being willing to pay the price. 💡

Whether you’re working on self-improvement or helping your children develop healthier habits, a clear reward-and-consequence model can make a powerful difference.

When it comes to technology and social media, consequences don’t have to be harsh. They can be simple, constructive, and agreed upon in advance.

This is one of the principles behind the Ghazali OS; helping us change bad habits into better ones through responsibility, discipline, rewards, and constructive consequences.

Lesson 8: Course Correct

Mistakes don’t have to stop you. They can teach you.

One of the most powerful characteristics of successful business people is their ability to course-correct. They make a mistake, learn from it, get back up, and keep moving.

This is the final step of the Ghazali OS: Muataba; Course Correction. Ask yourself: Why did I slip up? What caused the mistake? What can I learn from it?

Journal it. Understand it. Make a firm resolve to do better; and keep moving forward. 🚀

Lesson 9: Conclusion

Change takes time. ⏳

One of the biggest traps today is the desire for instant gratification. We want results now; but meaningful change, personal growth, and successful businesses are built over time.

Sometimes it takes 6 months, 2 years, 5 years, or even 10 years to see the results of your effort. The key is learning to sacrifice what feels good today for what will be better tomorrow.

As part of the Ghazali OS, remember: change takes time and change takes effort. It won’t always be easy, and it certainly won’t always be quick; but if you stay committed, you can build something meaningful for the future.
